I recently came up against a goofy scenario where I needed to accurately measure items at closer than normal ranges. For the record it is to assist explosive breaching. I assure you I will not be close enough to get fragged, but during training I had a dilema. If you scope is set to mil on one power, everyone knows the formula. size in inches x 27.77 divided by mils = range. My Nightforce mils on 22x, how can I figure a constant for 5.5x. I figured the highe end constant for my Leupold. It mils at 12x, the constant for 20x is 54.1. This in turn gave me a mil relation of 1 to 1.95. (holding wind on 20x each mil equals 1.95) I don't remember exactly how I did it. I was able to duplicate the formula using a known size measured in mils on the appropriate power. The problem is no matter how many times I try for 5.5x, different sizes show different ranges. Example: I measure the following at 5.5 x 11 inches = .750 mils at 100 yards 11 inches = .625 mils (maybe a tad less) at 200 yards 11 inches = .425 mils at 300 yards 8.5 inches = .250 mils at 300 yards Sorry for the long post, but I know there are those here that can do the math. I admit it's not an everyday use problem, just trying to give myself more versatility. Those blow stuff up guys want to know lots about doors, windows and walls. K. Divers

Interesting problem/discovery.
When you were ranging/MIL'ing on 5.5 power at the various distances had you carefully set the parallax at the high power setting for that distance?? I'm initially thinking the lower power setting is too course for accurate MIL readings but there could be other confounders too. My "too course" thinking is that at the 22 power ratio that 11" size 5.5 power object would only be 2.75", and MIL'ing a 2.75" object could also present problems. I could be all wet on this thinking.
Interesting, guess it's time for a field trial of my own on this subject as I use the MILs for fast movers by changing to the lowest power setting on my Leupold(s).
